First things first, we’re so glad to have Felicity Jones (Like Crazy, Breathe In, The Theory of Everything) finally playing a badass, a rebel. We’re a big fan of her intellectual beauty and Brummy accent. The muse of Drake Doremus (Like Crazy, Breathe In, Equals) has now soared to another level of stardom. How? A likable rising star turned award-winning actress, now is kicking off her chance in the box office.
And we’re not talking about Jones and her supporting role in the superhero universe. She’s given a brand new role, a lead in the Star Wars’s new spin-off. Hence, her role as Jyn Erso, pretty much resembles the female pioneer, Leia Skywalker. Even without the double hair bun, Jones oozes the spirit of Leia. Rebellious, stubborn, and with a potential of leadership, Orso might be an unknown relative of Skywalker’s family. Let’s keep our fingers crossed.
Another anticipation is the cool actors jumping off around Jones. Diego Luna as the cool captain, Donnie Yen as the space Ip Man, along with Forest Whitaker and Mads Mikkelsen with not-yet-announced characters. Being the only pretty baddie, Jones should portray Erso very strong at heart and hard at head, as well as skillful with tactics and weapons.
Star Wars: Rogue One is the only reason why we should wait the sequel of Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens another year longer, but we believe this waiting is worthy. Taking time and place before the First Order (please see the timeline above), Rogue One travels us to the days before Emperor rules the galaxy in A New Hope. At that time, Death Star construction has completed but its plan is stolen.
Here comes the rebellious part. Erso is assigned to steal a plan containing manual guide of destroying Death Star for good. But as we know it, only until Return of the Jedi, Death Star is forever gone. So what’s the objective of carrying out this particular timeline prior to Luke Skywalker’s returning to the saga? Rumor widely spread says that Erso is potentially a mother to Daisy Ridley’s Rey. It also says that Erso is a rebel heroine whom Leia takes as role model. Does Erso belong to any branch of the family tree?
Unfortunately, there hasn’t been a hint Force is strong in her yet (read: please refer to First Trailer). And unlike other Star Wars episodes emphasizing Force at the first place, Rogue One is a scoundrel, doing her own things her own way. Should there be time for Erso to learn Force just like Luke at Dagobah, she likely objects. “Look what Force did to Anakin.”, she probably says. “Anyway, it’s Luke who restores the balance, not me.” Our opinion might change seeing her say the famous line“May the Force be with us” in Official Featurette – Celebration Reel. Is she a Jedi born or does she merely happen to be related to a Jedi, just like Han to Luke?
Obviously, Erso with her baddie gang don’t come up to change the history. Instead, they represent an important part of it which has been overlooked for a quite long time but not so far away. Although any backstory can intrude the story we all know, the idea must linger on Erso’s whereabouts all this time, if she failed the mission. Did she die or instead survive and hide somewhere waiting the moment of reunion?
