Star Wars: The Last Jedi Trailer: Luke Shows More of Himself, However, in the Shade, as Rey Likely Remains the Star

The subtitle arouses us much curiosity on who the Last Jedi is, despite the new director confirmed that it refers to one, singular, strongly hinted at Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill). However, we opt to stick the mystery til the release date as the premise lingers on Rey’s (Daisy Ridley) family lineage and Kylo Ren’s (Adam Driver) whereabouts.

Also not to forget that Ren is potentially a Jedi, remembering he’s a nephew of Luke and grandson of Darth Vader. Only if the Supreme Leader Snoke (Andy Serkis) once again convinces survived Ren to stay on his side, Ren is officially the new generation of Sith. The trailer also shows Rey is training the Force within her, finding the balance as well as the truth of her background. Who is she? Why does she appear so special and strong in The Force Awakens (2016)?

Another mystery is Luke who says firmly yet sounds hopelessly in the end of the trailer “I only know one truth. It’s time for the Jedi to end.” While most think that Luke is going to that Last Jedi, we prefer to assume that there’s a new label for the new generation born with the Force (hinted strongly at Rey), as it becomes so senseless seeing Luke train Rey with the Force and Lightsaber if it’s for nothing.

The trailer also shows that Rey is truly gifted. Unlike Yoda to Luke in The Empire Strikes Back (1980), Rey seems to get more consciously aware of how critical the situation is. Being a lone wolf since childhood and dreaming of a great yet serious adventure in life, Rey doesn’t take any chance for granted. Especially after the intense duel with Ren who’s contented with great Force as well as great anger inside him, Rey realizes that upcoming threat won’t go off easy.

Now helmed by Rian Johnson (The Brothers Bloom, Looper), the debut trailer has already something big and serious; explosions and obvious comeback of Force. Poe (Oscar Isaac) are seen busy dealing with the mess striking Resistance while Finn is seemingly seriously knocked out. Luke shows more of himself, however, in the shade, as Rey likely remains the star, about to shine brighter in this 8th episode.

Release Schedule: December 2017
